In collaboration with Truthout.org, we talk with Truthout reporter Sam Ferguson in Buenos Aires about the war crimes trial of Gen. Rovere. Rovere was a high-ranking military leader during the 1970’s, and was indicted, then pardoned in the 1980’s. In 2007 the pardon was revoked, and he is on trial for the “disappearing” of hundreds of citizens of Argentina. Sam expands on the text report to give context on the legal and political issues, and we compare this effort at accountability with potential future trials over war crimes here in the US. Thanks Peter. So informative. Sam gave us a great (and awful) history lesson. It’s great to hear you even if you’re not live in the Bay Area. Do hope you’ll be here soon.
The interview made me awfully wonder if such mass disappearings of progressives could happen in the U.S? A right-wing government could use a real or phoney terrorist attack blamed on liberals to justify it just like in Argentina.
I’m afraid it could happen here if the Bushies aren’t held accountable for the torture and disappearing of Muslims and Arabs.
Very informative. While Sam seemed to wheez a little when he spoke , he drew a very clear parallel to what is happening in the US and explained it in a much clearer way than what I have heard before.
Thank you for this. I hope to hear more on this topic.
