In-Depth Interview: Greg Palast Searches for Mythical Double Voters

Free Preview Clip

Investigative reporter Greg Palast returns, offers free tix for my Bay Area listeners to new flick: THE BEST DEMOCRACY MONEY CAN BUY: A Tale of Billionaires and Ballot Bandits. In his latest detective story, investigative journalist Greg Palast scours the nation in search of the “double voter” and the orchestrated effort of Republican operatives to suppress the vote of likely Democrats, using photo ID laws, and other measures, including the “interstate crosscheck” list that is used to purge voters with similar–but often, not identical–names in different states.

Palast tracks down Kris Kobach, Kansas Secretary of State and the legal brainchild of many right-wing schemes.  Palast ties Kobach to the Koch brothers, and talks to singer Willie Nelson and others whose names are on the secret list.

In our conversation, we cover a wide range of voting issues, and Palast zeroes in on GOP megadonor Paul Singer, the vulture capitalist who extorted $12 billion in the Detroit bailout and dropped $100 million on Mitt Romney’s wife.

While the Kochs and Singer appear to support libertarian values and conservative social issues, Palast concludes that their political actions are primarily aimed at controlling politicians in order to maintain sweet tax deals, like the “carried interest” rate that lets hedge fund operators pay less than a 15% tax rate.

Along the way, Palast plugs the Bay Area debut of the new film at the Grand Lake theater in Oakland on September 7, and offers a free pair of tickets to the first dozen listeners who ask.  Send your request to peter@peterbcollins.com pronto!
