Bellows’ background includes the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps/Vista; for the past 8 years she was director of Maine’s office of the American Civil Liberties Union. She has fought to restore constitutional rule as an opponent of government surveillance, and has led the campaign for marriage equality in Maine. For more info, her campaign website is here. In this wide-ranging conversation, Bellows takes on NSA spying on Americans, and calls for a new Church Commission and real reform. She’s opposed to the Patriot Act and FISA Reform law, along with the detention provisions of the NDAA.
On marriage equality and marijuana regulation, she calls for clear federal laws on human rights issues and full legalization of cannabis. She is strongly committed to reproductive rights, voting rights, and single payer health care.
She’s opposed to nuclear power, the Keystone XL pipeline, fracking, and the exploitation of tar sands and embraces the vision of post-carbon energy.
