Prof. Corey Dolgon explains how the conservative "kill it to save it" mentality is being applied to the scuttling of Obamacare, the privatization of education and the transfer of wealth to those who have the most already.Dolgon's new book is Kill It To Save It: An Autopsy of Capitalism's Triumph Over Democracy. He is professor of Sociology and Director of Community Based Learning at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass.
We open with discussion of the GOP efforts to dismantle Obamacare, which Dolgon correctly tags as enabling tax cuts for the wealthy. We talk about GOP senators who use detached language to describe how many people will lose access to healthcare under various proposals. We underscore that current legislation will end the "employer mandate" and leave the vast majority of American workers at risk of losing coverage. Dolgon responds strongly to Speaker Paul Ryan's recent comment that poverty is a choice.
We talk about efforts to privatize education, including Obama's Education Secretary, Arne Duncan, and Trump's pick, Betsy DeVos.
We also touch on GOP voter suppression schemes, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and Sen. Marco Rubio.
