On my recent vacation in Maui, I spent time with writer Anna Veneziano. Her novel, Le Amiche is based on her experiences growing up in Italy during Mussolini and World War II. She talks about life during wartime, and the stories of the friends she met later in life in San Francisco, all Italians who endured and survived the war. And she closes the interview with the reading of a poem written by an American soldier while serving in Italy. You can order her fascinating book here.
